Football club removes asbestos from roof and walls of Blundell Park's Pontoon Stand
Blundell Park - home of The Mariners |
GRIMSBY Town FC have replaced asbestos sheeting from the roof and walls of the Pontoon Stand at its Blundell Park ground.
In place of the potentially hazardous substance, metal cladding has been installed.
The works were completed earlier this month without the benefit of planning consent.
A retrospective planning application has now been submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council, and this is likely to be determined shortly.
Earlier this month (August 3), the club issued the following statement: "We wanted to provide our supporters an update on the work taking place on the Pontoon Stand roof.
"Due to a last-minute and unexpected request from the Safety Advisory Group a few days ago, the club has had to replace the Pontoon Stand roof ahead of the 2023/24 season.
"This was a job that we had planned to do during the next closed season, but after consultation, the work was brought forward at short notice.
"We are delighted to say that the majority of the roof has already been replaced and the rest will be completed in time for Saturday’s game against AFC Wimbledon.
"A huge thank you to our contractors and sponsors, Total Cladding, for pulling out all the stops to get this essential work done quickly, and our Facilities & Safety Manager, David White, for co-ordinating.
"We can now all look forward to our opening game of the new Sky Bet League Two season at a packed Blundell Park. Be loud, be proud and let’s (metaphorically) raise the roof!"
